About multifocal lenses

Understanding the multifocal lens table

Multifocal soft contact lenses correct presbyopia by presenting distance and near power to the eye at the same time (simultaneous vision). Instead of a single reading value, the near correction is usually banded as Low, Medium or High add, because the design spreads power across concentric or aspheric zones rather than one point.

Compare add options, optical designs, base curves and replacement schedules in the table above. Designs differ between brands (centre-near vs centre-distance, and various aspheric transitions), so follow each manufacturer's fitting guide and avoid mixing designs between eyes.

How do I choose the right add?

Start from the patient's spectacle add to select the Low/Medium/High band, then refine with binocular over-refraction on the eye. See the multifocal fitting guide.

What is modified monovision?

It combines a multifocal on one eye with a distance-biased or single-vision lens on the other, often biasing the dominant eye for distance and the non-dominant eye for near.

Why does the patient need an adaptation period?

Simultaneous-vision optics involve a contrast trade-off and possible haloes; the visual system needs days to a couple of weeks to neuroadapt. Counsel patients before fitting.
