Understanding colour and tinted contact lenses
Coloured contact lenses fall into a few categories: visibility (handling) tints that add a faint colour so a clear lens is easier to find in the case; enhancement tints that intensify an existing eye colour; and opaque cosmetic tints that can change the apparent eye colour entirely. Many are also available with corrective power.
The table above lists available colour options along with their material, replacement schedule and powers. Coloured lenses are still medical devices: they must be correctly fitted and cared for, regardless of whether they carry a prescription.
Are plano (zero-power) coloured lenses still medical devices?
Yes. Cosmetic, non-corrective coloured lenses require the same professional fitting, hygiene and aftercare as powered lenses. Poorly fitted or improperly sourced cosmetic lenses are a recognised cause of serious eye infections.
Do the tinted zones affect vision?
Opaque cosmetic designs leave a clear central aperture for the pupil, but in dim light the pupil can dilate beyond it, occasionally causing haloes or reduced peripheral awareness. Counsel patients accordingly.
